Honda and Mercedes<\/a> pushed the FIA to delay its ban<\/a> on qualifying engine modes until the Italian Grand Prix, according to reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two engine manufacturers reportedly told the sport\u2019s governing body that they needed “more time on the test bench in order to comply with the new provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The in-season rule change, which will disallow teams from using so-called \u201cparty modes\u201d during qualifying, was initially set to come into effect at this month\u2019s Belgian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes have claimed that the ban is an attempt by the FIA<\/a> to make the Silver Arrows\u2019 power unit<\/a> and overall package less competitive, in the hopes of helping Red Bull and other teams challenge them for race wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, team principal Toto Wolff<\/a> said it could in fact make them more competitive in the races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
