On Monday, the Mercedes F1 Team finally announced<\/a> that it had signed a new deal with Sir Lewis Hamilton<\/a> which will see them continue their ultra-successful partnership into 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to this, the seven-time World Champion was technically a free agent as his contract with the Silver Arrows had expired at the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delay in Mercedes<\/a> and Hamilton inking a new deal prompted speculation that the Brit\u2019s demands for a pay rise, among other things, were holding up the negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It later transpired that this wasn\u2019t the case, and the holdup was due to them having to work out the other finer details of Hamilton\u2019s contract extension, including the charitable foundation Mercedes and the seven-time World Champion will be jointly launching to promote diversity in motorsport.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to Formula1News.co.uk<\/a> on Thursday, a Mercedes source said he feels Hamilton was mistreated by some F1 fans, pundits and the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think many people actually owe Lewis an apology for questioning him and his intentions,\u201d the Mercedes insider told this publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure he wasn\u2019t bothered by it and he\u2019s more focused than ever on winning, but I think it was quite malicious in some cases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the same source told Formula1News.co.uk that Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will be their drivers in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny suggestion that Lewis won\u2019t be with us this year is simply fake news. Plain and simple,\u201d the source told this publication in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no reason he and Valtteri won\u2019t be driving our cars in 2021. You can consider it confirmed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same source later said<\/a> we can expect a deal to be finalised and announced in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLewis\u2019 future here was never in doubt. It\u2019s just a question of time. I\u2019m confident it will be wrapped up and announced sometime in Feb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
