Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has opened up about his racing future as he navigates the toughest season of his career to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in his 22nd year in F1 and third season with Aston Martin, the 43-year-old has yet to clarify when he\u2019ll hang up his helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alonso recently secured his first points of the season at his home Grand Prix, offering a glimmer of optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During recent European race weekends, Alonso addressed his outlook on retirement, emphasizing that Aston Martin\u2019s 2026 car will play a key role in his decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It will be a very important one, yes. Not the final one,” Alonso said of the 2026 challenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think I need to see how next year starts and how motivated I am.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motivation and Physical Readiness Are Key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Alonso explained that his future depends on multiple personal and professional factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every year, there is a different mood into the season,” he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“How you perform, how competitive you feel yourself, how motivated you are to keep your fitness at the high level, personal situation, family situation \u2014 all these things play a role.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the struggles this season, Alonso said he still finds immense joy in racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You need to feel it when it’s time and I don’t feel it yet,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I jump in the car and I’m on the grid, I’m just so happy to be there and motivated and performing well.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alonso also pointed to physical limits and performance metrics as eventual indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The stopwatch will tell me also when I have to stop.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, “If we keep it healthy and in good conditions, the stopwatch also will tell me one day that I don’t feel fast enough.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aston Martin\u2019s Bet on Newey Could Change the Game<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Alonso\u2019s future may hinge on the influence of legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team is counting on Newey\u2019s expertise to gain a competitive edge ahead of the 2026 regulation changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Alonso\u2019s contract ends in 2026 \u2014 when he will be 45 \u2014 the Spaniard left the door open for continuation if circumstances align.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m happy when I’m on the grid. Even if the results are not nice at the moment, I’m so motivated to go to the next race.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded, “So all these kind of things are very alive now, but there is no guarantee that this will be forever.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alonso currently holds the second-longest winless streak in F1, behind Nico Hulkenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
