But you know, when you go into a negotiation with a team like Mercedes and they’re not offering you what they should be for your ace… then why would you just let him go?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She added, \u201cWhat kind of team principal would I have been if I’d have just let George go cause Mercedes said, \u2018We want George now.\u2019 That\u2019s not how it works, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Claire Williams admitted that the emotional impact of holding Russell back was significant. She described herself as a \u201cpeople pleaser,\u201d someone who struggles with the idea of being the one to disappoint others \u2014 especially a driver as dedicated and ambitious as Russell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd it was really difficult. It was very hard to stand my ground,\u201d she explained. \u201cIf someone comes to me and they’re upset and it’s because of me… it\u2019s really hard, you know? But I had to put my team first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She added, \u201cI wasn\u2019t able to do that with George. And I will forever hate\u2014not hate myself for that\u2014but it doesn\u2019t feel good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the delay, Russell did get his shot with Mercedes in 2022, replacing Valtteri Bottas.
