Ex-Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has defended Lance Stroll<\/a>, insisting that he \u201c100 percent\u201d deserves his seat in F1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really feel for Lance, because it is not an easy position to be in,\u201d Button said during the \u2018In The Fast Lane\u2019 podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe knows what people think of him \u2013 he\u2019s the gifted driver that his dad has basically bought a team for him. In one way, you can say he\u2019s so lucky but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s lucky at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuing, Button said, \u201cI feel for the guy, because there\u2019s so much pressure put on him, and everyone thinks he is in Formula 1 because of his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut he has achieved \u2013 he has won everything on the way through to Formula 1. He\u2019s put in some fantastic results and drives, in Barcelona he finished fourth, he beat Checo [Sergio Perez], he did a great job, and he has many times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe consistency isn\u2019t there, whether he\u2019s enjoying it himself or not I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s very difficult to tell with Lance, but he 100 percent deserves to be in Formula 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHas he had more opportunities than others? Yes, but I think that\u2019s put more pressure on him, so fair play to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stroll, who has attracted plenty of criticism for being reliant on his billionaire dad Lawrence Stroll to get into Formula 1, made his debut in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He entered F1 as the reigning Formula 3 European Champion, but had fairly limited single seater experience at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid rumours that Sebastian Vettel<\/a> is poised to sign a $15 million contract with Racing Point<\/a> at this weekend\u2019s Belgian GP to replace Sergio Perez<\/a> next season, Button also looked back on his time as teammates with the Mexican at Mclaren<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we were teammates he wasn\u2019t the most consistent, some races he would just arrive and Bahrain he was so fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if he understood why he was so fast. But other circuits that didn\u2019t suit his style really hurt him, like Shanghai, where it is front-limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuing, Button said Perez had a very unusual driving style that was suited some circuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s still the case but he is extremely quick, a real fighter, he\u2019s grown as a driver. He\u2019s confident in his ability, he understands the bigger picture, it\u2019s a long season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
